Travel Bug

I've been itching to take a vacation somewhere and Andi finally jumped on board. We just booked a "I hate winter, get me outta here" trip to Cabo San Lucas in March 2014. Andi's got a huge work event planned for February and I know he'll be cracked afterwards. Couple that with a seemingly never-ending winter (it doesn't feel that way now, but I know it will by then) and we'll be ready to get away.

Of course, I won't be able to leave my precious babe at a wee 4 months old, so the kids are coming with us. Sure, traveling with kids changes the nature of vacations, but having them with me 24/7 is no different than what I do on a daily basis. It's just a change of scenery. My life is already accustomed to kids' meals, car seats and sleep schedules. In this instance, I'm adding sandy beaches which, WIN. We invited Andi's mom to come along too, so we'll get a few chances to break away and enjoy each other's company.

Andi is usually all about travel, but now that we have the cabin he says he'd rather take the kids there to get away than go through all the expense and commotion of traveling to a new destination. I get that ... but I also love the excitement of seeing somewhere new in the world, having someone else make my meals (homemade guacamole and Corona's sound delicious) and all the adventure that goes into travel. Sometimes, the cabin feels like a second home to me (in a good and bad way), so I'm anxious to go on a real vacation in the truest sense of the word.

Neither Andi or I have ever been to Cabo before, so it'll be a new place to check off the list. Plus, it'll be Tory and Aden's first time leaving the U.S. Gotta work on getting those passports for the kids. On the third attempt, we finally got Tory's passport picture at Wal-greens the other day, so the rest of the application process should be easy now.

Isn't half the fun of a trip the planning and anticipation anyway? This vacation gives us something to look forward to as we suffer through make the best of the cold Minnesota winter. Definitely looking forward to a view like this in 60 more days:

  1. So jealous!! That looks amazing! I can't wait to see tiny Aden feet asleep on the sand.

Our big trip this year is likely going to be to Chicago/Michigan in June. Ha. Although, we've never been to that part of the country so it will still be fun, but it's no Cabo! :P

  5. It's nice to have a trip to look forward to. I've never been to cabo but it looks great. With both my kids passports, I had uri notarize a form (ups store notarizes) so he didn't have to go to the post office to submit the application with me. Made it easier.

  6. That'll be awesome -we just booked a get us out of dodge spring trip too, but just to Arizona - but no kids!! We're going with another couple who live in Billings, MT so we were limited to where we could both fly somewhat cheaply! It won't be HOT but it'll be better than here!!

I'm not a huge fan of traveling with little kids alone, but with a grandparent along you are golden.

  7. I look forward to living vicariously through you guys in March! I never took winter trips until A. came into my life and OH MY GOD does that make a difference in getting through the long winters.

And I agree that bringing along an extra adult to help with the kids is so key to elevating the trip from simply parenting in a new and lovely location to actual vacation. The ability to sneak away for a bit here and there is huge!

We are trying to figure out how to do a vacation that will feel like a vacation and I think we are going to ask our babysitter to come along. But that won't be for awhile yet, or if it does happen it will be a very local type trip. Anyway, fun to dream about :)

  8. How awesome! I totally get you on the "I hate winter, get me outta here!" After Christmas passes, and we're still looking at another 3 months of winter, I definitely get the bug, too.

We just had a baby in October, so my husband doesn't think we can make an April trip to the beach work this year. I disagree and seeing that others can do it convinces me that we can.

  9. With the exception of one spring break trip, I have never taken a winter vacay. Until now!!! We are going to Hawaii in january...its work for hubby & vacay for me! We are stayinf a few extra days so he can have some non-work fun too. Anyways, I have spent a lot of time worrying/freaking out about being gone for 11 days but now I can't wait to get out of this ridiculous frozen state. Now I'm kind of wishing the trip was mid-feb or later because there will still be sooooo much winter left when we come back.
